Poor relations: the two Europes

The European Commission has called for a speedier integration of Eastern Europe into the European Community. The biggest obstacles are protectionist trade barriers which do not allow Eastern Europe to export the few products in which they have a competitive advantage.

Better than aid
Article Abstract:
A new study shows that the opening of European Community markets to farm exports from Eastern Europe would benefit both economies. Eastern Europe would earn hard currency, and EC consumers' and taxpayers gain would be enough to compensate EC farmers for their loss.

Most Eastern European governments hope to someday be part of the European Community, but there is much discontent with the Community's commercial policies. The EC is strictly limiting what Eastern Europe is allowed to export to the West.
