Practice in Poland: culture clash
Article Abstract:
There are opportunities for British architects in Poland. Most western interest is in Warsaw with its population of 1.7 million, where there is a demand for high quality developments. There is a favourable situation for Western businesses but architects must be careful to clarify the legal ownership of sites. There is a large building industry and a full materials base for it but declining standards and poor quality control. Modern management needs training. There are about 9,000 Polish architects who are generally well-educated in design and aesthetics.

Energy efficiency in offices; good practice case study
Article Abstract:
The headquarters building of Refuge Assurance in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England uses both natural and mechanical heating and ventilation. The building incoprorates a flexible office layout but its courtyard design allows most workers access to a window. Mechanical heating and air conditioning is controlled by computer and used to supplement natural systems. Mechanical cooling is used less than predicted due to the building's thermal stability and efficient lighting.

Energy efficiency in advance factory units (Good practice case study 106)
Article Abstract:
Energy consumpion was monitored in a typical factory unit. The 3,750 sq meter steel and brick building is used as a warehouse and packing plant with heating provided by gas fired boilers. Glazing is used in the office areas, there is some insulation and movement monitors are used to control lighting in the storage area. The overall energy use of 192 kWh/sqm is good but improvements could be made to the water heating and thermal control in the production areas.
