Vietnam's rice farmers have realized sharp increases in rice production in the 1990s, with corresponding gains in export growth. Revenues from Vietnamese rice exports amounted to $400 million in 1992, and the Thai rice industry may be harmed if export growth continues.

Farmers in California are losing the political clout they used to have to make sure they had all the water they needed. Increasing urbanization in the state's Central Valley region may force farmers to switch to crops that require less water.
