Pressure tactics
Article Abstract:
China's protests over the democratic reforms being implemented in Hong Kong stem from allegations that the initiatives violate the principles of the Basic Law. Complicating the matter is the accusation that Britain is not adhering to an agreement allegedly reached between Britain and China. However, Hong Kong's Governor Chris Patten disavows the existence of such an agreement which purportedly concerns the 1995 election and the political rule after the colony has reverted to Chinese rule. China has threatened to retaliate if the Patten pushes political reform in the colony.

Principle or profits
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong Gov Chris Patten is seeking the support of the international community for his democratic reform plan meant to safeguard the island colony's transition to Chinese rule in 1997. Patten travelled to Canada, the UK and Japan to seek these countries' support for the plan. However, Asian countries have elected not to involved themselves in the plan. The plan, and Patten's efforts to seek foreign support for it, had earlier been criticized by China.
