Price of peace
Article Abstract:
South Korean voters, dissatisfied with domestic conditions, pared down the ruling Democratic Liberal Party's (DLP) share of seats in the National Assembly to less than 50% in the Mar 1992 elections. Pres Roh Tae Woo and his administration are giving in to pressure to put aside economic rapprochement with China and Russia, which is unpopular with voters, and concentrate on improving the domestic economy. However, it is mentioned that the more important gains towards reunification, which hinges on Russian and Chinese cooperation, must not be neglected because of short-term problems.

Peace of mind: prize-winning monk applies Buddhist ideals to modern disciplines
Article Abstract:
Venerable Prayudh Payutto has garnered recent international attention, including Unesco's Prize for Peace Education, for the work that has made him Thailand's leading Buddhist scholar. His greatest work is 'Buddha-dhamma,' a modern interpretation of the 'Pali Canon' that helps readers to understand Buddhism and apply it to their daily lives. This meets a great need in Thailand, and the book may be Thailand's greatest Buddhist scholarly work ever. Prayudh speaks internationally and has written 150 books since 1975.

Cargo hold: Asian business pays a high price for air protection
Article Abstract:
The protectionism that rules Asia's airways costs travellers and shippers, despite the defenses of their policy mounted by the system's beneficiaries. Businesses outside the region that compete with Asian companies pay less to ship goods the same distance, and non-Asian countries are more willing to extend so-called Fifth Freedoms that let carriers transport goods and passengers between other nations without extensive bilateral agreements. Shrinking margins worldwide will only make these costs more significant.
