Article Abstract:
Local opposition is slowing construction of a railway along India's Konkan coast as well as driving proposed industrial ventures elsewhere. The 740-km Konkan Railway will run from Bombay to Mangalore, slashing travel times by taking shortcuts that 19th-century builders could not manage. The area, economically underdeveloped but with a sophisticated and literate population, would benefit from the development but there are fears exploitation and environmental degradation. A plan to make village councils elected could worsen problems.

No more fizz: Coca-Cola falls out with India's Parle Foods
Article Abstract:
Coca-Cola and Ramesh Chauhan are fighting over his actions as the head of Parle Foods, Coke's Indian distributor. Chauhan claims he was cheated in his agreement with Coca-Cola in Nov 1993, while Coke claims bad faith on his part. Neither side has actually filed suit or demanded to leave the agreement. Observers suggest that Chauhan may be gambling on the uncertain political climate, in which outside corporations may be at a disadvantage.
