Article Abstract:
Considerable controversy has arisen over a donation made by Liu Chaoying, daughter of China's then military leader Liu Huaqing, to Taiwan-born American Johnny Chung, a leading fund-raiser for the US Democratic Party. There are allegations that part of the donation went to the Democratic National Committee. It has been claimed in the US that Liu, who was an officer in the People's Liberation Army, was seeking to boost China's nuclear missile programme, with the donation possibly playing a vital role in determining US policy on exports of sensitive satellite technology to China.

Article Abstract:
President Clinton decided that company executives of firms operating in China would not be invited to attend an official state dinner in Beijing because Clinton did not want to focus on commerce as the basis for the relationship between the two countries. The firms are angry that they have been denied the opportunity to demonstrate their closeness to the president and they are strengthening links with their Chinese clients instead. U.S. companies have invested $18 million in projects in China and many of them are working very successfully.

Ties that bind
Article Abstract:
Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger believes US-China relations have improved substantially in recent months, and predicts the great drama of the next generation will be the development of a balance of power in Asia. China will try to make 'one country, two systems' work in Hong Kong in the hope of eventually using it in Taiwan, but efforts to internationalize human-rights issues in Hong Kong could undermine that effort and arouse Chinese fears. China and the US share an interest chiefly in preventing hegemony in Asia.
