Shrinkage of Japan's trade surplus may be watershed in relations
Article Abstract:
Analysts noted that Japan's export surge has reached its peak as the country's global merchandise trade surplus declined by 6.6% during the first nine months of 1995. Moreover, they expect Japan's trade surplus to decline by $80 billion by 1996, after reaching a high of $120.9 billion. The expected decline in Japan's trade surplus, coupled with the country's increased importation, could significantly boost its trade relations with other countries, particularly the US.

Japan's hunger for imports is abating as yen weakens
Article Abstract:
The weakening of the yen is expected to stem import growth in Japan. The slowdown, however, is not expected to materialize until demand for imported merchandise declines. Japanese demand for imported goods, such as automobiles and pharmaceuticals, has been rapidly growing since 1993. However, the 24% rise in imports during Jan.-Aug. 1996, did not influence the volume of imported goods which has decreased dramatically.

Japanese trade surplus appears to have peaked
Article Abstract:
Statistics released by the Japanese Ministry of Finance shows that Japan's 1995 trade surplus totaled $107.1 billion, an 11% decline from 1994 and the first full-year drop since 1991. Analysts believe that the declining trade surplus is reflective of fundamental changes in Japan's trading patterns. During 1995, imports of office equipment, computers, semiconductors and automobiles sharply increased.
