Asian diplomats are speculating about appointments to the key foreign and economic offices under the administration of US president-elect Bill Clinton. In the foreign policy department including the State Department and National Security Council, expectations are focused on former officials under Jimmy Carter, Clinton's Oxford associates, moderate Democrats and conservative Democrats under Ronald Reagan. Candidates for the Treasury Department and Council of Economic Advisors may include Clinton's friends at Oxford, as well as conservative economists, financial experts, business and trade executives.

The Democratic Party convention held at the Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, resembled a festival with a number of varied activities accompanying the official affair. Different campaign memorabilia either supported the team of Bill Clinton and Albert Gore or criticized the incumbent tandem of George Bush and Dan Quayle. Women also had a prominent role with keynote speaker Barbara Jordan voicing out their cause. Clinton's acceptance speech emphasized the need for unity at a time when racial tensions have risen in the US.

Blocking the lobbyists: has Clinton gone far enough - or too far?
Article Abstract:
US preident-elect Bill Clinton has introduced a new set of Draconian ethics rules that prohibits high level political appointies from lobbying any government office or agency where they have worked with. In addition, lobbying for other countries is also strictly prohibited. However, critics complain that former officials are not restricted to lobby agencies where they have not worked in. Numerous loopholes were also identified with the ban on representing foreign countries.
