Prodigal son
Article Abstract:
Softbank President Masayoshi Son has gained a strong reputation for his entrepreneurial skills. However, he experienced a number of serious challenges in 1997. Most significantly, the company's share price fell to only a quarter of its peak value, and this made it extremely difficult to raise money through bonds convertible into stock. There will be difficult decisions to make in 1998 if Son is to revive his business empire. Existing businesses will have to be made more efficient, and he will have to address concerns that the company is not sufficiently transparent.

Instant antiquity
Article Abstract:
The Panjiayuan Sunday Market in Beijing typifies the region's flea markets, now exhaustively raked over by professionals who buy up any true antiques but charming and exciting nonetheless. Most of the goods that purport to be antique are fakes, but the sellers make little pretense they are authentic. Thick yellow dust is ubiquitous, as are the crowds, though an early arrival can avoid the worst of the crush.
