Puncture ahead
Article Abstract:
The US economy has been growing since Mar 1991, and has never grown for so long in times of peace, though defense spending due to the Vietnam conflict prolonged a period of growth in the 1960s. Business cycles vary in length and depth, and contractions appear to have become less severe, while expansions have lengthened. This may be partly due to the increase in importance of the service sector, less affected by cycles, and to income security which helps stabilise the economy. External shocks and inflation appear unlikely to cause an end to expansion, but the end of a speculative bubble could create problems.
