The Arakan exodus
Article Abstract:
The massive influx of Muslim refugees from Burma's Arakan region into Bangladesh is causing tensions between the two countries. Bangladesh is faced with the problem of taking care of the 145,000 Arakanese refugees massed along the country's heavily guarded border. The Muslim Arakanese began fleeing Burma in late 1989 after Burma's ruling junta, the State Law and Order Restoration Council, began to settle Burmese Buddhists in northern Arakan's frontier towns.
