Push came to shove
Article Abstract:
Chine declared in Nov 1992 that it will not honor contracts entered into by the Hong Kong colonial government after Hong Kong reverts to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The notice was reportedly issued on instructions of Deng Xiaoping and expresses severe displeasure over Hong Kong Gov Christopher Patten's efforts to rush democratic reforms in the colony. It jeopardizes investments in Hong Kong, including a HK$8 billion development for a new container terminal and a HK$9 billion site development project for a new airport.

Immovable object
Article Abstract:
The Thai military's power is manifest in all aspects of national development, particularly politics and business. Plans to downsize and streamline the organization are proving difficult to implement, since these will affect 280,000 troops and countless military officers in positions of national influence. It may be even more difficult to remove the military from the political arena in view of its record of overwhelming civilian rule and instituting military dictatorships in its stead.
