Sudan's chance for peace
Article Abstract:
The civil war in Sudan has lasted for 17 years, but there is hope for a settlement. Sudan has been hit by US sanctions and the petroleum industry has been hit by the war, since a key pipeline has twice been damaged. Egypt favors a peace plan that does not involve Sudan being broken up. The south is seeking a referendum on whether it should be independent, while the northern part of Sudan, which is mainly Muslim, favors keeping Sudan as a unity. The different interests are difficult to reconcile, though there is increased optimism that this may be possible.
