Non-performing lenders
Article Abstract:
The Thai banking industry saw a rise in stock prices after an announcement that it would be aided by a number of measures such as new bankruptcy laws and a fiscal stimuulus package. Banks' stock prices have since fallen and the problem of non-performing loans has worsened. The banks reported big losses for 1st half 1999, and there have been revelations of problems at two banks, Thai Farmers and Krung Thai. Banks could be over the worst, with economic recovery among factors aiding their recovery. There is still much to be done in terms of collecting loans, and this is a problem that commercial banks are working on.
