Putting back the politics: recent books on American planning history
Article Abstract:
There has been a considerable increase in interest in the history of urban planning in the US. Within this trend, attention has mainly focused on a tension between the inflexible idealists and the technocratic realists and between liberal republican goals for urban reform through humane design and those emerging from the 'Progressive Era.' In fact, the history of urban planning has been more complex than this. Historical explanations must always take into account the personalities of the main players.

Village design statements: some aspects of the evolution of a planning tool in the UK
Article Abstract:
Community involvement in planning decisions in the UK could be based on Village Design Statements (VDSs). However, it seems that tension has arisen in the promotion, preparation and implementation of VDSs between their roles as a community tool and as a planning tool. It is clear that VDSs are regarded as a planning tool by most of the people involved. It is therefore only as a planning tool that they will influence the quality of new development.
