The use of factorization to create a mathematical problem to encode a number is widespread, yet the safety of the method is unknown. A new method, created by Miklos Ajtai, requires the use of lattice reductions instead of factorizations and could provide more security for government documents.

A puzzling job

Unemployment has remained high in some ex-communist countries, such as Poland, but is quite low in others. Russian workers have accepted real-wage pay cuts until better private-sector jobs appear, keeping unemployment down. The ultimate social costs of the contrasting systems are unknown.

The puzzling failure of economics
Article Abstract:
The good policies expounded by economists are often misunderstood and misinterpreted because the public and government officials have a poor understanding of economics. Economists are to be blamed for this lack of understanding, as well as for the propagation of bad economic theories.
