The options for North Korea
Article Abstract:
Concerted international diplomacy is needed to persuade North Korea to rejoin the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to eschew producing nuclear weapons. North Korea must choose between economic development and nuclear weapons. Economic development is the only viable choice since building nuclear weapons would bring harsh economic sanctions. North Korea's withdrawal from the NPT will not go into effect until Jun 12, 1993. The US, Japan, South Korea, China, Russia and the UN therefore have until then to work together to reason with North Korea's leaders.
