Indian crusader seeks to halt child slavery
Article Abstract:
Kailash Satyarthi is leading the fight in India to end the virtual enslavement of millions of children, especially by the carpet industry. Children between six and 14 years old are compelled to labor for as much as 16 hours a day in cramped, poorly-lit factories. These children are often starved and subjected to physical abuse, even torture. Satyarthi leads the Bonded Liberation Front, which in turn belongs to the South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude. Satyarthi differs from other opponents of child labor in that he organizes raids to free enslaved children.

A debate for grown-ups: child labor as the lesser evil
Article Abstract:
US and European demands that Asian countries end child labor neglect harsh realities, and trade embargoes sparked by the issue often lead to even worse conditions for the children. Their choice is not between work and school or play, but between work and starvation, a choice Western societies have largely left behind after centuries of growth. Now Asia needs such economic growth, which will come only through liberalized trade and through internal reforms targeting the caste system that dooms so many to poverty.

Hype and heroines: is the new Indian woman a media creation?
Article Abstract:
Change among gender roles and expectations in India moves slowly, but is now notable enough to generate a backlash from Hindu revivalists advocating a modest, demure demeanor. Educated, middle-class urban women are in the vanguard of a shift making women more prominent. There is a more prevalent acceptance of premarital sex among young women and a tendency to see sex as a woman's individual choice. There is still need to address issues such as female illiteracy, dowry deaths and female infanticide.
