Quake cuts Japan's surplus overall, but not with U.S
Article Abstract:
Statistics show that Jan 1995 Kobe, Japan earthquake damage to major exporting facilities caused Japan's overall trade surplus to decline by more than 50% during Jan. 1995, going down to $2.88 billion from the $6.03 billion seen in Jan. 1994. However, the country's trade deficit with the US continued to grow, totaling $3.19 billion or 3.5% above the level for the same period in 1994. Analysts believe that the US-Japan trade surplus will not go down until the US economy finally levels off from its strong recovery.

U.S.-Japanese dogfight over air rights brings role reversal to trade talks
Article Abstract:
The US and Japan are currently locked on the debate regarding beyond rights. The US is demanding that Japan honor its existing airline agreement and allow Federal Express Inc. to land and pickup cargo and passengers in Japan. However, the Japanese refuse to do so, stressing that the US is exercising an unfair advantage since it already has three carriers that invoke beyond rights while Japan has only one. Both sides have threatened to impose sanctions on each other's airlines if a compromise is not reached.
