Questions of justice
Article Abstract:
Considerable controversy surrounds Thai police chief Salang Bunnag, who faces questions over the deaths of six suspected drug traffickers in Suphanburi province in 1996. He was the senior officer present when the suspects were detained, but claims that he has been unfairly targeted because he was responsible for investigating the land scandals that eventually led to the collapse of Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's first government in 1995. He is also the subject of defamation suit brought by Interior Minister Sanan Kachornprasart.

A line in the sand
Article Abstract:
The Philippines is escalating the volume in its dispute with China over control of the Spratly Islands but Manila is proving weak both militarily and diplomatically. Several members of ASEAN have backed Philippine concern but the latter has gone beyond accusations to blow up several Chinese facilities that it believes were military, though China says they were shelters for fishermen. Philippine naval weakness stems from a long reliance on the US, which takes no official position on the overall dispute.
