Turnaround in the air
Article Abstract:
The privatization of Philippine Airlines Inc is expected to result in much change in both personnel and policies. Specifically, the newly installed management team led by Antonio Cojuangco must rally for more effective management, pricing schemes and routing to maximize aircraft utilization. The airline is further expected to turn significant profits, specially in view of the implemented refleeting initiatives and its benefits from the government's assumption of corporate liabilities amounting to $520 million.

Rude surprise
Article Abstract:
Effective rules for financial disclosure are badly needed for Japanese companies. The case of Hanix Industries, which unexpectedly filed for bankruptcy protection on May 31, 1993 after publishing impressive-looking financial reports, illustrated this need. Such misinformation can lead to severe losses on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The Japan Securities Dealers' Assn on Jun 16, 1993 urged companies to give responsibility for disclosure to directors and to make underwriters liable for misleading reports.
