ROMANIA: ALCATEL EXPANDS
Article Abstract:
Alcatel set up its Romanian subsidiary, Alcatel Network Systems Romania, in 1991, to take advantage of the emerging market there. In 2001 it has a staff of over 1,000, and a 93% stake in Datatim, a former computer company which became involved in telecommunications in a joint venture with Alcatel in 1991. Alcatel has 50% of the mobile market and 45% of the fixed lines market in Romania. It is led by Dan Bedros. Its first deal was with Romtelecom, which resulted in 1.5mn lines being installed, worth FFr 1.5bn. Alcatel Network Systems Romania covers software development, installation and production. In 1998 Alcatel became involved in the mobile phone sector in Romania, where it is the main supplier, serving GSM Mobilrom, mobile network with 1.4bn subscribers, whose major shareholder is France Telecom, which has a 71% stake. GSM Mobilrom accounts for over FFr 1bn in sales for Alcatel. In September 2001 the company signed a FFr 250mn contract with the Romanian railway. It also has a framework agreement with RDS of Romania, cable television company, which has 800,000 subscribers. At end 2000 Alcatel installed the first asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) commercial network. There is also a telecommunications project with TranElectrica, national electricity utility. By January 2003, the Romanian telecommunications market is expected to be deregulated, which will speed up Alcatel's development in Romanian telecommunications and enable it to offer services to new customers. It is a player in an increasingly competitive market, in which all the leading manufacturers of telecommunications equipment have a presence. According to Dan Bedros, however, Alcatel has the advantage of ten years experience in Romania.
