Raiffeisen und PSK planen mit Sat 1 Bank-Gesch fte via Digital-Fernsehen

The Raiffeisen banking group and the PSK bank < sterreichische Postsparkasse> hold 25% each in the TV company Sat 1 sterreich, which is to apply for concession for digital terrestrial television. A law is being prepared that would allow one national frequency for digital terrestrial television in Austria. It might take effect in year 2000. Both Raiffeisen banks and PSK are planning home banking via digital television. Sat 1 sterreich would need to invest in digital transmission technology, and clients would need a decoder for the service. Also the Krone publishing group and the German media giant Bertelsmann are said to be interested in a digital terrestrial television licence in Austria.

The Austrian beverage industry is observing a trend away from beer and towards non-alcoholic beverages. In 1997 consumption of sparkling soft drinks rose by 0.7% to 7.140mn hl, consumption of mineral and table water by 6.2% to 5.846mn hl and consumption of fruit juices by 15.9% to 2.791mn hl. Beer sales were down 0.4% to 9.145mn hl. These trends have continued into the first quarter of 1998. Ice tea sales, which are not included in the beverage statistics, currently have a volume of 800,000 hl and still have a large market potential.

AUSTRIA: MINERAL WATER MERGER IN THE MAKING?

According to the News magazine, Romerquelle is in talks about the acquisition of Voslauer. This would mean that Austria's two biggest mineral water companies would go together. Siegfried Menz, finance director Voslauer's parent, Ottakringer Brauerei, has rejected such talks. There is also speculation about Nestle being interested in Romerquelle.
