Indonesian president, Abdurrahman Wahid, is hoping that Acech will stay within Indonesia, and is offering concessions to persuade Aceh that autonomy is preferable to independence. He pays insufficient attention to women's groups and to the behavior of the armed forces, which he has not condemend.

In Suharto's shadow

Pres Suharto of Indonesia is expected to win his sixth five-year term at the upcoming elections, but some shady financial dealings by his family members are starting to attract a lot of criticism. Suharto is 70 now, and are no plans as of yet to groom a successor.

Tien Suharto

Pres Suharto's wife Tien, who allegedly derived substantial economic benefits from her status as First Lady of Indonesia, died at age 72 on Apr 28, 1996. Pres Suharto is said to be considering resignation, now that the influential Tien has passed away.
