Achieving record level proceeds in 1996
Article Abstract:
The value of privatisation sales reached a record level in 1996 with a total of $86 billion. This total was boosted by a period of intense activity in October and November when nine governments executed an issue. This period included Europe's largest-ever privatisation, the $13.3 sale of Deutsche Telekom. The UK's $2.9 billion sale of Railtrack was also important, it being the first time an entire rail network has been sold. A list of major privatisations of 1996 is included together with an indication of major events scheduled for 1997.
