China is no longer of as much strategic importance as it once was, and this makes it possible for the West to chastise the country for its dismal human rights record and its crackdown on pro-democracy forces. The sale of arms by the US to Taiwan should send China a warning.

A $13 billion trade deficit with China that is expected to grow even higher has Pres Bush threatening to levy punitive tariffs on Chinese exports. Bush wants China to remove barriers preventing US exports from reaching the Chinese market.
