Red rockets' glare
Article Abstract:
Sino-American relations deteriorated due to US fears that China was increasing its sales of weapons to other countries. First came suspicions that a Chinese ship was illicitly transporting components for chemical weapons to Iran, followed by the supposed sale of Chinese M11 missile technology to Pakistan. The M11 sale prompted the US on Aug 26, 1993 to impose two-year sanctions on 10 Chinese aerospace companies. However, one sign that US-China relations may eventually improve is the American decision to allow China to join the Missile Technology Control Regime.

Drifting apart
Article Abstract:
US-Chinese relations worsened as the US accused China of secretly and illegally shipping materials for chemical weapons to Iran. China on Aug 3, 1993 condemned the US for using naval and air forces to monitor the Chinese container ship Yin He in the Strait of Hormuz off Iran. The US had tracked the ship since July and maintained that it contained precursors for mustard and nerve gases, a charge the Chinese deny. China's desire to earn money by selling weapons to Third World countries is likely to continue to irk the US.

Winds of change
Article Abstract:
Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's informal visit to the US has both strained US ties to China and clarified their current state of relations. Many analysts foresee rockier times ahead between China and the US, thanks in part to the former's apparent determination to be a military superpower and in part to internal forces in both countries. The US Congress appears to be not only overwhelmingly pro-Taiwan, but also partly anti-China. China may have more to lose if the relationship sours, but that might not prevent it.
