Article Abstract:
Taiwan has invested very heavily in promoting itself in the US since the late 1980s. Lobbying firm Cassidy and Associates extended its contract with Taiwan in 1997 for three years for $5.9 million, and Taiwan is also using former US Senate majority leader Bob Dole to represent its interests. China is of greater economic importance to the US than Taiwan, but has often failed to take advantage of this situation. The image presented by China in the US remains dominated by the domestic political needs of China's Communist Party leadership.
