Animal attraction: prescription drugs designed for pets are a booming business for pharmaceutical companies

Pharmaceutical companies are finding additional income from the growing sales of prescription drugs and toiletries designed for pets. Statistics Canada reports in its 1996 Census data that the total 1996 sales of the pet pharmaceutical industry in the country was around $70 million. Pharmaceuticals are realizing the size of the market and are developing new drugs for arthritis or pain relief for pets.

The US outdoor advertisement market is undergoing consolidation, which, in turn, is pushing US companies deeper into the Canadian market. Canada, which has only two dominant outdoor advertising agencies, is much less fractured than the US market, which has up to 700 outdoor agencies. Consolidation is set to change all that, however, as US agencies buy into their northern counterparts.
