Renaissance man, artist adds contemporary strokes to traditional Tibetan painting
Article Abstract:
Artist Nyima Tsering strives to blend modern and traditional themes in his variations on traditional Tibetan painting. Ultimately he hopes to bring to Tibet a form of the artistic renaissance that swept Europe 500 years ago. Born in Sichuan, he traveled the Tibetan plateau to study the existing art there, and decided it needed something new. Since graduating from art school in 1962 he has drawn themes from religious scroll paintings, Tibetan folk lore, and daily life, gaining increasing popular and official recognition.

Beijing intellectuals have their place
Article Abstract:
Intellectuals in China managed to build their own haven after having been neglected and suppressed by the government. They lost their prominence and fundamentality within the Chinese context after the 1949 Party campaign to eradicate the freedom for critical and independent thinking. Thus, they moved underground, even relocated abroad, to exchange ideas, discuss critical issues and debate on ideologies, without government intervention.
