Renault fabricara 400,000 coches mas, 100,000 de ellos en Espana
Article Abstract:
According to the assistant group managing director of auto maker Renault, production will increase by 100,000 vehicles in Spain in 1998 for a total production of 485,000 cars. The increases will be 50% in engines, 25% in assembly and 40% in gear boxes in the Seville plant. The production increase will mainly affect the Megane model at the plant in Palencia. To meet increased labour demands, a flexible work scheme will be introduced with work on Saturdays and adjustments in vacation days. The Renault representative said the company has plans to build a plant in Curitiba (Brazil) in late 1998 which will have a capacity to produce some 120,000 cars.

For the fourth month in a row new car sales in Spain have surpassed the 100,000 vehicle level and in June, 1998 reached a total 178,714 units, up nearly 25% compared to the same period one year earlier. In the first half of 1998, sales were up 15.3% for a total 589,225 units sold. The number could reach 1.2mn by the end of 1998. The record was 1,120,000 cars sold in 1989. The six-month ranking by manufacturer was Fasa (Renault) with 80,397, up 22.6%; Seat with 76,935, +30.5%; Citroen, 73,309, up 22.7%. Opel, Fiat and Volkswagen saw sales drop off by 3.47%, 13.6% and 21.5%, respectively.

According to the Spanish insurance sector association, Unespa, over half a million uninsured automobiles circulate on Spanish roads, which incur costs totalling Pta 15,000mn to insurance companies every year. Unespa claims that one in every 13 vehicles is not covered by insurance. In order to collect insurance compensation, many uninsured Spanish drivers usually report an accident stating that a friend or different vehicle was involved. Unespa suggests that a list of uninsured drivers be put together by the head traffic office.
