Research shows new HIV strains resist drug-combination AIDS treatment
Article Abstract:
A research, conducted by Sabine Yerly and her colleagues at the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, revealed that new HIV strains resist drug-combination therapies used in the treatment of AIDS. Speaking at the 12th World AIDS conference in Geneva, Yerly said that in a study of 57 newly-infected people, they found out that six showed resistance to the new protease inhibitor drugs that play a major role in the combination drug-therapies. Moreover, five of the of the newly-infected people showed resistance to AZT, Glaxo Wellcome PLC's drug for HIV that is commonly used in "cocktail" treatments. However, news of the drug-resistant strains were tempered by other reports that some patients who fared well for a long time on the combination drug therapy may someday be able to end the treatment.
