Retail Banking - Money Machines vs. Personal Service
Article Abstract:
The character of the banking transaction has been forever changed by the advent of the electronic funds transfer systems (EFTS). Banks in Europe and the United States sometimes bear no resemblance to the same institution only a decade ago. Banks have still to exhaust the possibilities of electronic banking as some banks are moving into the 'banking at home' arena. It may be that training of staff to market new products and services represents the major challenge facing retail bankers in the 1980s.

Hambros' view across the channel
Article Abstract:
British bank Hambros PLC made a 'negative' decision with positive results when the 'Big Bang' in financial markets approached, deciding against establishing market-making firms in equities or UK government bonds. Hambros worked instead to link its future to activity on the Continent, and began developing formal ties with several institutions there. Hambros has also developed a mergers and acquisitions team to help companies reach appropriate foreign partners.
