Retreat from glory
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: According to the governmental conception of the damping of mining, the volume of Czech brown coal extraction should be 40-45 mil t per year after 2005. The volume is 7-12 mil t lower compared to 1998. The extraction of coal should decrease by 2 mil t per year during the same period. The expected state costs on the damping should be nearly 19 bil Kc in 2000-2005. About 48% of the sum should be represented by expenditures on the social and health demands of miners, 22% by costs on the technical liquidation of mines and 30% by expenditures on the recovery of the consequences of mining activities. The total volume of coal mining will decrease to 60 mil t in the Czech Republic in 1999 compared to 120 mil t in 1989. The state invested 30 bil Kc in the damping during the same period. The volume of coal mining is about 12 mil t per year currently. The extraction of coal decreased by 27% in 1997 compared to 1989. The volume of brown coal mining decreased to less than 52 mil t in 1998 compared to 59 mil t in 1994 and 70 mil t in 1990. The drop will probably increase after the start of the commercial operation of Temelin Nuclear Power Station in 2003.

Old Glory's strength
Article Abstract:
Patriotism is seen as important in the US, and patriotic messages are used to sell products on TV. There is a move to protect the US flag from acts of desecration, yet it is difficult to define this crime. The US flag is represented on articles such as coffee mugs, and this debasement is far more common than the few political acts involving destruction of the flag. The conduct of the war in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, indicates a reluctance to die for one's country, and patriotism often appears to be confined to waving the flag.

Reflected glory
Article Abstract:
Remote sensing using ambient radio signals is being developed by two research groups in the US. There is a radar team at Lockheed Martin Mission Systems, based in Maryland, while a sonar team is working at La Jolla, California, home of the Scripps Institute for Oceanography. The US government will test the Lockheed system in early 1999. The underwater system developed at the Scripps Institute uses background noise found under water.
