Ruling the merger wave
Article Abstract:
UK companies invested $127.7 billion in purchasing foreign concerns in 1998, according to the corporate finance division of accounting firm KPMG. Indeed, UK companies invested more in purchases abroad than companies from any other country. They have given particular attention to the US, where British direct investment was $18.3 billion in 1997, 30% of the total. Investing abroad does not seem to be having a negative impact on the UK economy, especially as the UK itself is attracting many foreign companies.

Riding the wave
Article Abstract:
Japan is experiencing a recovery following a very bad recession and offers excellent opportunities for investment. Companies have been cutting back on staff for the first time and foreign firms can now recruit Japanese employees more easily. There are now cheap loans and tax incentives to encourage foreign companies to make acquisitions. It is now less costly to buy shares on the Japanese stock market than before the recession, although since the beginning of 1999 there has been a 30% increase.

UK PLC hurt by EU ruling
Article Abstract:
The position of London as the European centre of investment banking may be negatively affected by moves by the European Court of Justice to make VAT on fees for some corporate finance transactions in the UK irrecoverable. There will be an indirect impact on acquisition activity, and share sales and sales of subsidiaries, along with rights issues and open offers, will also be affected.
