Winners and losers
Article Abstract:
There has been increased inequality in pay in the US from 1979 to 1996, with the richest tenth of Americans working full-time earning five times as much as the poorest tenth in 1996, compared to 3.6 times as much in 1979. Gloablization is seen as one reason for this, but there does not seem to be a clear link between pay inequality and trade links with countries where pay is low. Tecnological advance has boosted demand for educated workers, though the low US minimum wage, and the trend toward multi-tasking have also had an influence on pay levels.
