Today's college students: responsible, self-reliant, realistic
Article Abstract:
College students in the 1990s are more ambitious, financially responsible and independent than their baby boomer parents. Their attitudes were shaped by experiences of having parents who were either always working, divorced or laid-off. One survey of students showed that 80% of college students believe in the importance of having retirement income. Seventy-one percent believed in being debt-free while 78% have opened their own savings accounts. About 56% and 73% of junior high and high school students, respectively, also expressed concerns about college costs. Moreover, college students are cautious about assuming debt with most charging a mere $101 month on their credit cards and 55% paying debts in full. Many also obtain credit cards for use in emergencies or to establish credit histories.
