Road work hits fast lane

India's spending on highway construction will soon quadruple to $4 billion a year, according to World Bank estimates. The large number of highway programs, made even more numerous by the states' abilities to add their own plans, has experts wondering if India has the resources and finances to complete them on schedule.

Dabhol project vexes foreign firms
Article Abstract:
Enron Corp. and the Indian state of Maharashtra are in a dispute over the Dabhol Power Co. project, which is 65% owned by Enron. Maharashtra no longer buys power from the utility, and Enron may want out of Dabhol completely, which could have a negative effect on other foreign investments in Indian power projects.

New Delhi plans to free 'captive' power in key reform
Article Abstract:
The government of India is in support of small plants supplying single customers with electricity. A policy is currently being prepared which would allow small power plants to sell extra power to state-controlled electricity boards. Financial aid is also being proposed by the government.
