The cost of long distance telephone service remains unreasonably high, nearly twice as much as that in the US. The European Commission is trying to introduce some competition to the continent's state-run telephone companies but the monopolies are resisting the attempt.

Small telephone companies in the US are circumventing the state-run telephone monopolies in other countries by offering discount rates to foreign consumers. The practice exposes state-run overpricing and soon may be taken up by the larger telecommunications companies.

The FCC has imposed a cap on rates telephone companies pay other companies for long-distance calls, to lower the high rates of international calls. This practice should be ended because it creates dishonesty and unfairness in the telecommunications industry.
