Rolling out the barrel
Article Abstract:
Nippon Beer Co. is planning to import to Japan draft beer produced by Philippine-based San Miguel Corp. Shigeru Uchida, president of the company, said that the barreled beer will cost around 30% more than Japanese brands. He also admitted that the venture may be hard considering that the Japanese are not so willing to pay premium for Asian brands. Uchida, however, observed that San Miguel already has a presence in Japan and that its high brand recognition will off set the higher prices. Nippon Beer plans to import 280 barrels of San Miguel starting late in August 1998 for around 70 Japanese restaurants.

Dilemma of price control
Article Abstract:
Economists and policy makers in Japan are sharply divided over the use of targeted inflation to stabilize its troubled economy. The question of using such a measure has been brought up as the rest of the region looks to the country to lead its neighbors out of crisis. Proponents of targeted inflation believe that increasing prices would ease asset depreciation and stimulate people and firms to invest in new homes and increase spending on new facilities. Opponents of the measure fear that further depreciation of the yen could prompt China to devalue its currency and worsen the crisis.
