Brussimmo House Office Building, Brussels: this is a recent project showing how steel can respond to the needs of our time
Article Abstract:
Brussimmo House, occupied by the European Free Trade Association, has a steel framework and external glass skin, giving it an impression of lightness and transparency. The structure was designed to enable electrical and mechanical services to be compatible with all types of partitioning and flooring. The double skinned facade of aluminium subframe and an internal skin within a wood frame, was chosen on the basis of computer simulations of the building's thermal performance. The roof supports are curved rolled-steel beams covered with curved-profile galvanised steel sheeting.

Changing the approach to commercial office construction
Article Abstract:
The majority of prestigious office developments provide column-free office space, and steel has always dominated the clear-span office market. Cellular beams can minimise the cost and weight of the frame, and deep cellular beams were used in a recent Ove Arup projects. A report Steel or Concrete, The Economics of Commercial Buildings, concluded that the cellular beam is the most cost effective long span system and may be more economical than short and medium span solutions.
