Royal reproach: king gives politicians another scolding
Article Abstract:
Thailand's beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej appeared on television on Sep 12, 1995 to criticize politicians and senior officials for the third time in three months. The latest scolding concerned floods in Bangkok, the capital's worst since 1983, and especially the failure to develop and implement flood-control plans. Observers said the King's words reflect a broader public sentiment, and may signal trouble for the new government led by Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa. He also criticized landowners and developers who do not set aside land.

Talking tough: U.S. lawmakers call for a harder line on Burma
Article Abstract:
Rising pressure in the US to apply sanctions on Burma for its human-rights violations may force CA-based Unocal out of a joint venture to build a 416-km gas pipeline into Thailand. A US Senator will offer a bill in mid-July seeking economic sanctions, human-rights activists are pressing the Clinton administration, and 61 congressmen signed a letter to President Bill Clinton critical of Burma's leaders. The Senate bill will come just before the 6th anniversary of the incarceration of a Burmese pro-democracy leader.

Book worm: publisher reads market indicators to predict best sellers
Article Abstract:
Book publisher Trasvin Jittidejarak hopes to establish a Southeast Asian English-language book industry independent of the Western behemoths. She founded Silkworm Books in 1989 as part of her family's Suriwong Book Center; it has now published 42 titles, with plans for 24 more. Trasvin's work has attracted international attention, some of it displeased, as New York and London publishers sometimes think she wants to pirate their titles. She operates out of Chiang Mai, in part to encourage Thai decentralization.
