Spain's large kitchen appliances market consistently declined from 1989 to 1993 due to recession and price cutting, but continued to account fro 29.5% of volume sales in the home appliances sector. Dryers posted the largest increase in volume sales with 200%, while washing machines, cooking appliances and refrigerators posted very minimal growth. Grupo BYSE led market sales with 20.7%, followed by Fagor and Albilux. Hypermarkets accounted for the biggest retail sales with 16%.

The sluggish growth of Spain's small kitchen appliances market can be attributed to reduced demand and an influx of cheap imports. The market experienced a 24.5% decline in real terms value from 1989-1993. However, sales of sandwich makers grew by approximately 17.2% between 1992 and 1993. Factors that will determine market growth include penetration and product levels, product innovation and pricing. Volume growth of about 26% is expected from 1993-1998.
