Ruffled waters: Chinese oil exploration sparks new row with Vietnam
Article Abstract:
Vietnamese authorities denounce the oil exploration activities being undertaken by the Chinese in territories which they claim to belong to their country. The exploration site is reportedly on Vietnamese soil based on the boundary limits set by an 1887 agreement between China and the former French colonizers of Vietnam. China, however, cites the law passed in Feb 1992 by its national assembly as its justification for its ownership claim over the disputed territories. The law provides for China's ownership of all islands, including the Spratly Islands. The exploration is a joint project of the Chinese government and Crestone Energy Corp.

Second time lucky?
Article Abstract:
Foreign oil companies expect a major oil discovery after years of mediocre results in their offshore operations with the auctioning of Vietnam's Dai Hung oilfield. The Dai Hung oilfield was once drilled by Vietsovpetro who backed out due to lack of capital and technology. Other sites are being offered for bidding to very interested parties who see Vietnam as a potentially significant oil-producing country.
