Japanese electronic goods discount stores are attracting hordes of buyers while electronic specialty stores are losing more and more customers. This is because the discount stores offer as much as 50% cuts from prices of electronic goods that they bought from excess inventories of wholesalers and retailers. Specialty stores, on the other hand, are experiencing slow sales because the best they can do is offer a 20% discount on electronic items. Special arrangements with their manufaturers bar them from doing the discount store strategy.

Five top industrial nations have agreed to push the American dollar lower, thus allowing the Japanese yen to strengthen further against the dollar. Japan is facing increased pressure to play a bigger role instimulating world economy while making an effort to reduce its trade surplus. With the yen's appreciation, Japanese overseas investment and domestic spendinghas notably increased. However, forecasters have reason to believe that any further appreciation may mean a lesser percentage of Japanese economic growth.
