Rush for Indian telecoms tender
Article Abstract:
Domestic and foreign firms have committed a total of $35 billion in licence fees as they compete for licences for basic telecom services in India. A bid of $27 billion was made by Himachal Futuristic Communications, which has won the right to provide basic telecom services in nine telecom circles. The other leading winner was Reliance-Nynex, with licences for five circles.

Tenders opened for Indian Telecoms
Article Abstract:
Basic telecom services have been opened up to the private sector in India in line with national telecom policy. Only registered Indian companies will be allowed to participate in basic telecom services, although government owned companies are excluded from bidding. Private sector licensing will be classified in circles A, B and C according to business potential.

India plans more public sector sales
Article Abstract:
The Indian government is considering a third round of public sector sales following the poor response to disinvestments in public sector undertakings (PSUs). It needs to make up the shortfall from the target 40 billion Rs. The government may also continue with sell offs in PSUs including Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.
