Russia eyes the world
Article Abstract:
Clear indications are emerging about future trends in Russian foreign policy. Russia seems to be becoming more cautious about involvement in new adventures. This was reflected in the fact that former spymaster Yevgeny Primakov managed to dissuade General Alexander Lebed from pressing for Russia to encourage resistance in northern Afghanistan to the new Taliban government. The other key element of Russia's new foreign policy is a commitment to ensuring that Russia's assets and influence are not further diminished.

Russia's brutal war
Article Abstract:
Russia has become involved in a war in Chechnya which is popular at home, but which is leading to greater isolation for Russia abroad. Western governments have to show that they will not accept behavior from Russia that was unacceptable when it was the behavior of the Soviet Union. Western countries cannot intervene in a military sense, and faults have been committed by Chechen leaders. No further funding should be given by the International Monetary Fund to Russia until it ceases to bomb Chechnya.
