Russian bargains
Article Abstract:
Samsung, a South Korean electronics firm, obtained microchip laser technology from the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St Petersburg, Russia. The agreement demonstrates that Russia can be a source for technology when US or Japanese sources are either costly or closed off. Seven Samsung units have entered into contracts with the Russian institute since Sep 1990 so that Samsung could have the technology it needed to develop the digital video disc recorder that it brought out in Feb 1993. The Russians' extreme need for cash makes them amenable to deals of this sort.

Eagle eye
Article Abstract:
Loral Corp Loral Fairchild Systems (Loral) is suing 25 South Korean and Japanese consumer electronics firms, which includes Sony Corp, for infringement on two patents of charged coupled devices (CCD) used in video camcorders. CCDs were invented in 1969 at the AT & T Bell Laboratories and originally intended for picture phones, and later obtained by Loral which shifted CCD development to defense applications. Ironically, the CCD's potential in hand-held video cameras was first realized at Sony Corp, which drove CCD research along commercial lines as early as 1970.

Solar solutions
Article Abstract:
The use of solar cells has had limited applications in artificial satellites, solar-powered car prototypes, watches and calculators. The main problem that has to be solved is that of increasing the light-to-electrical-energy conversion ratio. The highest ratio obtained, which is 25%, were in solar cells made by Telefunken System Technik of Germany used in the Spirit of Biel, winner of the 1990 World Solar Challenge Race in Australia. Scientists are studying how to make the technology commercially viable to convince manufacturers to invest more money in research.
