Growing pains
Article Abstract:
China's Hainan province founded China Hainan Airlines in 1990, in the face of major challenges. After getting loans and permission to buy four Boeing 737s, the airline sold shares to cover start-up costs. One of several such airlines started recently, it is enjoying great success: it averaged 90% passenger loads for its first two months. Profit margins are slim due to controlled air fares, but Hainan's growing popularity bodes well for the airline's future.

The tainted millions
Article Abstract:
Units of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) are caught between inflation and limited funding increases. THe PLA has therefore been authorized to operate businesses to bring in funds to feed the soldiers and buy basic equipment. This opened the door to massive corruption; an extensive audit found at least $175 million in unreported earnings. Some units appear to be engaging in speculation in foreign exchange, stock markets and real estate.
